Yealmpton is situated in a pleasant, prosperous area approximately 5 miles from Plymouth City Centre where agriculture and tourism are important. The population is well-catered for in terms of amenities with numerous schools, local shops, a post office and medical centre either in the village or just a short distance away.

Generally, houses are detached with three or four bedrooms. Given the rural feel to much of the area, there is a need for a car, although there are many places to walk or visit nearby. Take a stroll through leafy woodland along the banks of the River Yealm which flows through the village towards the picturesque Newton Ferrers and Noss Mayo, just a few minutes drive away.

Locals appreciate good food and wine, and enjoy eating out on a regular basis. There are some excellent places to eat in the village and nearby, see below for more information.

Old Mother Hubbard

A version of the famous nursery rhyme "Old Mother Hubbard" was written by Sarah Martin (1768-1826) of Yealmpton in Devon and published as The Comic Adventures of Old Mother Hubbard and Her Dog by J. Harris of London on June 1st 1805. This is believed to be the first recorded version of the rhyme but in part at least was most likely based on earlier work now long since forgotten. In Yealmpton, the story runs something like this: When she was just 17, Sarah was a visitor and eventually Rural Property Sales - Kitley Caves Areahousekeeper to the Kitley estate of Sir Henry Bastard, just outside of the village. In 1785 Prince William Henry began a series of visits to the estate. Sarah was a very attractive girl when she met the future King and, naturally, The Prince fell in love with her (as you would expect) and what is more, proposed marriage. However, coming from such different backgrounds there was no chance of a happy outcome. Sarah eventually retired to the cottage (Old Mother Hubbard’s), which is now a restaurant in the village, where she wrote the rhyme to express her frustration at never marrying the man she loved:

to fetch her poor dog a bone,
but when she got there
the cupboard was bare
and so the poor dog had none…
