About Newton Ferrers
In 847 AD, the Saxon King Aethelwulf created for himself an estate that stretched from the River Dart to the Plym. One of the many manors was Newton, belonging to Lord Edmar. The first record we have was the naming of the church of Newton in the Geld (tax) Roll of 1084. The Domesday Book of 1086 listed Newton as part of the holdings of the Valletorts of Trematon, across the Tamar, who gave it to the Ferrers family who had come over with William the Conqueror. By 1160 Ralph Ferrers was established at Newton and it was he who gave it the family name.
The current church, Holy Cross, dates back to the 12th Century.
The resident population of Newton Ferrers is about 1,100 with the majority of the inhabitants over the age of retirement. This population has doubled since 1900, and grows each summer with the influx of visitors.

The centre of the village is set some distance from the main harbour. Due to it's shape, the harbour is locally known as "The Pool". During the summer, and whenever the weather is fine, the Pool comes alive with local and visiting boats. It's a popular place to enjoy the waterside, the boats and the sunshine.
