Over the last year or more, the subject of parking in the town has vexed the placid, filled newspaper columns and inspired Disgusted of Maudlin Road to commit pen to paper.
The authorities introduced ticket machines, hiding one behind a post box, and have more recently introduced residents’ on street parking permits and the mystery of where and when people can park and for how much has deepened.
Many properties in Totnes have no parking of their own, but most residents and property buyers have at least one car and they need to know where they can park it.
Permits for parking in carparks
Permits for parking in carparks have long been available, but many do not know this or that there are two options available. However, the limited number of parking spaces in the carparks, the introduction of ticket machines in the streets and the cost of parking persuaded more and more drivers to park outside other people’s houses and this led to the introduction of residents’ on street parking permits.
“Luscombe Maye needed to know more about this” continues Piers Whiting, “because more and more people were asking us, no-one seemed to know, and also because it was becoming impossible to park outside some houses that we were trying to show to people.
