Berry Pomeroy
Berry Pomeroy is a village in the South Hams, about two miles east of Totnes, Devon. Berry Pomeroy Parachial Church of England Primary School is central in the village.
St. Mary's Church, in the village centre, has a stained glass window dating from the fifteenth century. The church was once visited by William III. The church features in the final wedding scene of Ang Lees film Sense and Sensibility.
Every summer, a fete is held in the grounds of the manor house next to the church, where Maypole dancing, Devonshire cream teas and a coconut shy may be enjoyed.
Berry Pomeroy Castle consists of a Tudor mansion within the walls of an earlier castle. It is located about a mile north-east of the village. It occupies a limestone outcrop that overlooks the deep, wooded, narrow valley of the Gatcombe Brook. The castle, now a romantic ruin, is reputed to be one of the most haunted in the British Isles. It has numerous legends associated with it, and although now only a shell of its former glory, it retains an air of its troubled history.
